This year contained many amazing horror films and horror remakes. Many were good and picking the top 10 was incredibly difficult. Thanks to many people I was fortunate enough to have watched many of the horror films this year. From mind blowing scares to the subtle psychological scares that keep with you throughout the night and well into the future the top horror films of the years range from thrillers to slasher films, philosophical to psychological.
10. "World War Z"
Trying to bring logic into the world of zombies by making it a virus that has spread throughout the world without a known origin made this a good film. What brought this to the bottom of the list is that it incorporated a nonsensical aspect where the virus only infects healthy people, like if a virus that kills you needs the satisfaction to know it was the one that killed you.
9. "Texas Chainsaw 3D"
This film was awesome as it continued on from the ending to the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and did so continuing on with the same slasher style. It did feel a bit cheesy but enjoyable for all the horror fans out there.
8. "American Mary"
This film was creepy and exciting. From the moment I started to watch it, it shocked me and grabbed my attention. It was gory and the lead actress was charming.
7. "Insidious: Chapter 2"
This second part did not reach the scare factor of the original but compared to many of the other horror films that came out this year it surely was creative and original.
6. "The Conjuring"
Based on true events and thrilling from beginning to end. This film is shockingly good as it tells a horrific story which is supported by real documents. It's one of the horror movies that most shocked me.
5. "The Purge"
Taking steps to be a psychological and philosophical thriller this film takes humanity to it's primal instincts. Having everything legal for one day is a scary idea on it's own.
4. "The Lords of Salem"
The thrilling film is thought provoking and psychologically chilling. Not only does the film mess with the mind but it keeps it out of the vulgar category while implementing some vicious tactics. Not just blood and gore but a truly scary story.
3. "Carrie"
One of two good remakes this year. It was difficult to choose which one was better. They both had a blood bath, they both had stunning actresses and both make an amazing addition to the franchise. This one just didn't reach the level of fright the other one did. Carrie tackled serious topics while modernizing a horror classic.
2. "Evil Dead"
An excellent addition to the "Evil Dead" franchise and one of the most chilling and fear-inspiring remakes in recent years. Jane Levy as title character Mia was just hot and sexy even as a deadite, in zombie form. The gore was over-the-top and left me wanting a sequel. It's a magnificent film that I was happy I got to see in theaters.
1. "Mama"
Probably the film that most caught me off-guard this year has to have been "Mama" presented by Guillermo Del Toro. It's a brilliant film with many scares. While watching it in theaters there were several instances where the audience screamed in real terror. The film included jump scares but the horror aspect was driven by more by building up suspense and delivering the satisfying major scare.
