The drama and excitement of Spanish novelas comes to English language television in "Jane the Virgin."
Season one is now available on DVD and season two is about to premiere on the CW on Oct. 12.
The quirky comedy which fuzes together soap opera style storylines with dramatic twists like those found in Spanish novelas is sure to entertain.
Jane, played by Gina Rodriguez, gets accidentally artificially inseminated which surely shakes things up with her fiancé Michael, played by Brett Dier.
Rodriguez is fantastic with great facial expressions to match well timed comedic delivery. She's beautiful and takes on the complex role well.
Dier matches up well, but can come off as serious in certain comedic moments through out the series.
The accidental donor turns out to be her boss Rafael, played by Justin Baldoni, who had a failed romantic encounter with Jane five years prior.
Baldoni pairs up with Rodriguez better and has a charm about him which helps make his character believable and comical.
To complicate things, Jane's mother Xiomara, played by Andrea Navedo, reunited with Jane's father Rogelio, played by Jaime Camil.
Navedo is brilliant as her witty and wild mother character. She evolves well as her character grows through the season.
Camil is hilarious and even though he is a real novels star he is able to make fun of the overly dramatic nature of novelas. He is able to be less than serious as Rogelio.
The show brings a true representation on the complexity of novelas, but does it in a hilarious way.
Although a comedy, the story deals with serious issues in a serious way. Season 1 develops characters well and allows the audience to care for even the villains of the story.
