Nanotechnology Innovator Partners with Award-Winning Visual Effects Company Territory Studios
and Renowned Design Firm Ammunition
to Build World's First HDR Wearable Screen
San Francisco-based virtual reality eyewear company Allomind announced on March 22 that they are teaming up with visual design company Territory Studios and industrial design firm Ammunition to build Speck: the world's smallest, lightest, most user-friendly wearable screen.
Speck will be wearable eyeware: a personal media device that will deliver truly immersive, 4K-resolution picture that places the viewer right in the middle of their entertainment – all in a package that is small enough to carry wherever you go, lightweight enough to wear for hours without discomfort, and affordable and stylish enough to be accessible to a broad range of budgets and tastes.
"When you look at pretty much any device out there, from our phones to our computers, the push is to go smaller," Abhijit Limaye, Allomind CEO, said. "Screens are the only components that are getting bigger instead. Why? Immersive field of view. People want to be immersed in their movies and media. We are making immersive screens smaller and low-powered so that we can fit what is effectively a 100-inch 4K television into a pair of sunglasses."
To build Speck, the Allomind team is drawing on decades of combined experience spanning everything from nanotechnology and optics, consumer electronics, and digital media.
Limaye most recently led the development of Amazon Echo Dot as a Senior Product Manager.
Allomind VP of Design Steve Barton has more than 20 years of experience designing consumer hardware, including Microsoft's X-Box and X-Box 360.
Tac Leung, Chief Experience and Impact Officer, has more than 19 years managing user experience design teams including yahoo.com and my.yahoo.com and recently built FinTech and blockchain design teams.
Co-founders Tony Tangand Roman Gutierrez are nanotechnology pioneers, responsible for the innovations that shrank high-resolution MEMS cameras to a size small enough to fit into our smartphones.
Allomind is partnering with leaders in industrial and user interface design to bring Speck to life. Ammunition, known for its work creating iconic hardware for companies like Beats by Dr. Dre, Polaroid, and Square, will take the lead on the industrial design for Speck. Territory Studio, perhaps best known for their work in films including "The Martian," "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Ex Machina," will design Speck's user interface.
"Territory is thrilled to be joining these companies, both at the forefront of innovation in their fields, to make Speck a reality," Marti Romances, Territory creative director for the West Coast office, said. "With the Allomind team's expert execution in nanotechnology, optics and hardware, combined with Ammunition's industrial design experience and our expertise in user interface - we're confident that together we will build something truly spectacular."
The development of Speck is ongoing – the team plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo later this year, to give early adopters a chance to be one of the first to secure their Specks.
"We're building Speck for customers," Limaye of the future crowdfunding campaign said. "So we want customers to be a part of our story as much as possible."
