Fifty years ago, Sergio Mendes released a cover version of “Mas Que Nada” with his band Brasil '66.
Mendes' sped-up, more aggressively danceable take on the Jorge Ben Jor track became perhaps the definitive reading of the song.
Now, celebrating five decades of Brazilian dance, DJ Trio Phil N Good, known for their remixes, have revived the Mendes version, keeping its essence but playing all the instruments from scratch (including a great percussion descarga at the end) and giving the song a contemporary sound and vibe.
Made up of DJ Hapa (co-founder of Scratch DJ Academy LA and host of Feel Good Sound on DASH Radio), J Rythm (Another Dirty Night on DASH Radio) and rising producer/DJ, Dirty D, Phil N Good also brought in T Lopez on vocals. The single is now available on iTunes here.
