A special presentation of the 2001 Sundance version of "Better Luck Tomorrow" started the LAAPFF 2017.
The film caught the attention of the Sundance audience and 16 years later the audience at the LAAPFF 2017 gave it a standing ovation.
Some of the cast and the crew – including director Justin Lin, actors Sung Kang, Justin Chon, Karin Anna Cheung, Aaron Takahashi, and Matthew Knowles – were in attendance and had a special Q&A with Los Angeles Times film reporter Jen Yamato.
Yamato steered the conversation to reminiscing about Sundance, but finished off talking about the portrayal of Asians and Roger Ebert defending the film.
The audience asked more about the cast revisiting this movie after 15 years and about getting the movie done with a very small budget, even for an indie film.
The surprising moment when the film got a distributor who gave money to do reshoots, add scenes and replace the ending for distribution.
The LAAPFF continues on through May 15.
