“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” had scenes that were bigger and more elaborate than any other movie in the franchise.
Veteran stunt coordinator Tommy Harper worked to create stunts which fit the newest story in the pirates franchise and were still adequate and safe for the cast.
Harper said, each stunt needed to be big, because the franchise merits it, but safety is always the first concern.
The action in “Dead Men Tell No Tales” moves across large terrain and multiple characters are involved, which is sure to make for larger than life scenes.
From a returning cast to new members to the franchise, there were skill levels that varied as well as stables he’d characters that needed to continue on in a way which matched previous movies.
Harper said, he has worked with Johnny Depp before, and with Depp knowing his character well after all the previous movies, the collaborative process was fun and they were able to push the limits of his character.
From fights scenes in a moving structure to parting the sea and having a battle in space that’s changing, the challenges to bring everything together takes skills in many aspects.
The world of “Pirates of the Caribbean” takes the characters on adventures from land to boats, from towns to the beach and each location requires different skill sets.
Having different skill sets is essential. Being a master of one thing can be great, but training in many different things and having multiple skills helps to the adapting atmosphere which can come up in projects such as “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” Harper said.
With a wonderful cast which includes Depp, Javier Bardem and Kaya Scodelario, the talent Harper had to work with was spectacular.
Harper had worked on several huge projects before and was thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” and help make the story as exciting as it could possibly get.
A great story helps make the grand stunts memorable and Harper brilliantly helped make beautiful stunts for some marvelous actors.
