Although Angel City FC produced many promising opportunities for goal, ACFC lose to new Northern California rivals Bay FC at their season and home opener on March 17 at BMO Stadium.
The final whistle blew to a 1-0 loss for Angel City after numerous opportunities at goal just could not find the back of the net.
The loss came after Bay FC’s Asisat Oshoala early goal in the 16th minute of play.
Angel City played well throughout the entire match, but a single mistake close to their net was costly as it led to the only goal of the game.
The crowd cheered from beginning to end, a sold out crowd of 22,000 in attendance at BMO Stadium showed up ready to make some noise.
Goalie Angelina Anderson kept several shots on goal from going in with some impressive stops.
That’s not to say the defense did not do a great job, the back line of M.A. Vignola, left back, Paige Nielsen, Sarah Gordon, and Ali Riley were busy keeping Bay FC’s fast attackers at bay.
Subs came a bit late but had an impact with a few promising opportunities at goal, although none were able to score to tie the game.
Riley and Vignola went up the sides to provide more options for a pathway to goal, which showed as Angel City had more shots at goat than Bay FC.
The midfield took care of the ball and made good passes which connected to give Bay FC trouble.
Angel City’s Amandine Henry looked strong in the mid, with newcomers Kennedy Fuller and Maggie Dougherty Howard on each side.
Bay FC goalie Lysianne Proulx had good position and seemed to be at the right place at the right time.
So many shots looked to be headed in the right direction only to have Proulx get fingertips enough to keep the ball out.
Angel City’s Claire Emslie had to put in much work with many promising classes into the box and corner set pieces that all looked dangerous.
Angel City FC play away on March 22 at 5pm PT against Orlando Pride. The game will be broadcast on Prime Video.
